SIP Trunking for Call Centers: Architecture, Provisioning, and Failover Design

SIP trunking is the technology that connects your on-premise or cloud-hosted PBX or dialer to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) over an IP connection. Unlike traditional ISDN or PRI circuits that provision a fixed number of physical channels, SIP trunks are elastic—concurrent call capacity is determined by your SIP provider's channel allocation and your network bandwidth, not by physical circuit count. This flexibility is what enables cloud call centers to scale from 10 to 1,000 concurrent calls without hardware changes.

    Channel Capacity Planning

Calculating required SIP trunk capacity for an outbound call center requires understanding concurrent call volume, not total daily call volume. A predictive dialer running 50 agents at a dial ratio of 3:1 may have 150 concurrent outbound calls in progress at peak, plus additional channels consumed by calls waiting for agent connection, AMD processing, and voicemail drop playback. Your SIP channel allocation must exceed your peak concurrent call count with sufficient headroom to absorb burst traffic without call rejection.

    • Erlang B formula for channel sizing: Use Erlang B to calculate required channel count based on your average call duration, call attempt rate, and acceptable blocking probability. A 1% blocking probability is a common starting target for outbound call centers; lower blocking requires more channels.
    • Burst headroom: Provision 20–30% more channels than your Erlang B calculation for a typical traffic profile. Dialer campaign starts, time-of-day calling patterns, and list penetration surges can create transient traffic spikes significantly above average.
    • Codec and bandwidth: G.711 (ulaw/alaw) consumes approximately 87 kbps per call with RTP header overhead. G.729 reduces this to approximately 29 kbps with a quality tradeoff. For high-volume outbound, calculate your available WAN bandwidth and ensure your codec selection keeps you within safe utilization limits at peak concurrent call count.

    Failover Architecture

"Single SIP trunk provider is a single point of failure. Production call centers require active-active or active-standby trunk redundancy."

SIP trunk failover should be configured at two levels: DNS-based failover that routes to a secondary provider when the primary is unreachable, and application-level failover that monitors trunk registration status and re-routes in-progress calls when trunk failure is detected. Active-active configurations distribute traffic across two providers simultaneously and provide the fastest failover—typically under one second—but require more sophisticated routing logic in your PBX or dialer platform.
