DID Provisioning, Porting, and Lifecycle Management for Growing Call Centers

Direct Inward Dial (DID) numbers are the caller IDs your outbound campaigns display, the inbound numbers your customers call, and the identifier that carriers use to validate your STIR/SHAKEN attestation. Managing these numbers well—understanding the provisioning process, porting procedures, carrier authorization requirements, and lifecycle retirement process—is foundational infrastructure work that, when done poorly, creates problems that are expensive and slow to resolve.

DID Provisioning: What Happens When You Order a Number

When you provision a new DID through a VoIP provider, the number is assigned to your account from the provider's inventory or requested from a carrier. The number is registered in the Numbering Plan Administration (NPA) database, associated with your provider's SIP routing information, and mapped to your account in the provider's system. This entire process typically takes minutes for numbers already in a provider's inventory, but can take 1–5 business days for numbers that must be obtained from the underlying carrier.

    • Local number selection: When provisioning DIDs for outbound campaigns, select numbers with area codes that match the geographic regions you are calling. Local presence dialing (presenting a local area code to the called party) improves answer rates—but requires that you are authorized to use those numbers and that they are in your STIR/SHAKEN-verified DID pool.
    • Number type selection: Local DIDs, toll-free numbers, and mobile numbers each serve different use cases. Toll-free numbers improve trust signaling for inbound-heavy operations. Local DIDs improve outbound answer rates. Mobile numbers are required for SMS outreach in some configurations.
    • CNAM registration: Caller Name (CNAM) is the name displayed on the called party's phone alongside the number. Registering your business name against your outbound DIDs in the CNAM database improves answer rates and professionalism. CNAM propagation takes 24–72 hours after registration.

    Number Porting

"Number porting failures that interrupt inbound calls are the most avoidable infrastructure disruptions in VoIP operations."

Porting numbers from one carrier to another takes 3–10 business days in the US and requires a Losing Carrier Authorization (LOA) signed by the account holder of the losing carrier account. Porting failures—where the number is taken out of service at the losing carrier before the gaining carrier activates it—are the most common cause of inbound call disruption during provider transitions. Always maintain the original carrier service active until porting is confirmed complete by the gaining carrier, and test inbound calls immediately after the port completes.
