Call Disposition Codes: Designing a Disposition Workflow That Actually Drives Decisions

Call disposition codes are the primary mechanism by which outbound call data becomes actionable insight. When agents accurately apply disposition codes that precisely describe call outcomes, the resulting data can identify which list segments are converting, which time windows produce the best right-party contact rates, which agents have the highest callback-to-conversion ratios, and when a campaign's list is sufficiently exhausted to justify list refresh. When disposition data is unreliable—because codes are ambiguous, agents select quickly to minimize wrap time, or the code list doesn't include obvious common outcomes—the data produces no usable signal.

Designing a Useful Disposition Code System

    • Limit codes to 10–15 options: More than 15 options requires agents to make judgment calls about which code to select, which produces inconsistent data. Every code in your list should have an unambiguous, exclusive definition that any two agents would apply identically to the same call.
    • Separate automatic dispositions from agent-selected dispositions:Dispositions that the system can determine automatically—no answer, busy, disconnected, AMD-filtered—should be applied automatically without requiring agent input. Reserve the agent-selection workflow for outcomes that require human judgment: conversion type, objection category, callback scheduling, and quality escalation.
    • Tie dispositions to next actions: Each disposition code should trigger a defined next action automatically: conversion code triggers CRM record update and callback schedule removal; not-interested code adds to internal DNC; callback requested code schedules a callback with the specified time; wrong number triggers contact suppression.
    • Include a quality signal disposition: A "Quality Issue" or "Supervisor Review" code gives agents a mechanism to flag calls with compliance concerns, unusual customer behavior, or situations requiring management attention—without disrupting the disposition workflow for standard outcomes.

    Data Quality

"Track 'Other' and 'None' disposition usage as a data quality metric. Above 10% signals your code list needs redesign."

When agents select "Other" or "None" as their disposition at a rate above 10% of calls, it means your code list does not cover common outcomes and agents are defaulting to catch-all codes. Review the specific calls coded as "Other" monthly, identify the actual patterns in call outcomes they represent, and add purpose-specific codes. This is an iterative process— disposition code systems should be reviewed and updated every quarter based on actual usage data.

    Disposition Configuration

Configurable Disposition Codes with Automated Next Actions

Build your disposition code taxonomy in our platform and configure automated next actions per code—callback scheduling, DNC suppression, CRM updates, and list removal—so agent disposition entry drives workflow automation without additional manual steps.
